The Great Gatsby film versions

The novel The Great Gatsby has been made into three different films. The first film was featured in 1926 as a silent film. It was directed by Herbert Brenon and starred Warner Baxter as Gatsby and Louis Wilson as Daisy Buchanan. It was the very first film version of the novel and many could not argue with how perfectly it had been done. It opened on Broadway in 1926 on February 2. It was eighty minutes long and mainly focused on the parties Gatsby had at his mansion. It has been called the lost film because none of the copies exist anymore.
In 1949 another film was released and directed by Elliot Nugent. It was not another silent film and focused more on the moral of the story. The 1974 version however has kept it from being released on television. This version disappointed many as the box office showed. The symbolism and imagery the book portrayed was going to be impossible to layout in the film. F. Scott Fitzgerald also includes sounds and weather change which are difficult to lie out on the big screen. Although it did not satisfy everyone it expressed the optimistic nature of the novel and was a success to many.

Dan Cody

Dan Cody was a man that Gatsby knew, he was very wealthy, and was a mentor towards Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, Jay describes Dan Cody as a father figure who employed him. He had pictures up of Dan Cody, in his house rather than his family members, so therefore he regarded Dan Cody as a very important person in his life.

Dan Cody is a wealthy copper mogul who met Gatsby one day, when Gatsby warned him about a storm. Then Cody took Gatsby as his assistant. Gatsby then fell in love with all of the wealth money can bring. One of Gatsby’s jobs was to look after Cody when he was drinking. This gave Gatsby a greater outlook on life. When Cody died he left Gatsby with $25,000 but Cody’s lady didn’t let Gatsby receive this money.

Dan Cody was really a mentor towards Gatsby. He taught Gatsby what and whatnot to do in life. He gave Gatsby the understanding of liquor and alcohol and what it causes. He showed Gatsby the wealth and luxury a person can live in. Gatsby was motivated by all of this and this is what powered him to want a wealthy lifestyle. Therefore Dan Cody impacted Gatsby’s life a lot.

Unrequited love

Unrequited love is to love someone but not receive that same love. it is an awkward and frustrating situation. It consists of a friendship and sometimes the friend wants more than just a friendly relationship. This situation then becomes awkward for both friends. It’s about loving someone that doesn’t love you back. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby tries to win Daisy back which is his long time lover but doesn’t receive the love he longed for.
It becomes frustrating for Gatsby because he’s been waiting for so long and has done so much to win Daisy back. The day the Daisy and Gatsby met for the first time in years was difficult because it was a mixture of emotions. Gatsby still truly love Daisy and would do anything for her love. Daisy was also in love with Gatsby but had remarried; meaning that she had given her love to someone else. Gatsby wanted her to confess her love for him to her husband but she struggled. Her love for Gatsby differs from her husband putting Gatsby in the awkward situation.
Unrequited love is a tortuous situation that can cause a person to become depressed and anxious. For Gatsby it was shocking and unbelievable. He could not believe that after all these years of triumph he went through it resulted in un-satisfaction. He was so sure that Daisy would fall into his arms the minute she saw him. The love was short and not enough for J. Gatsby. He expected more and wanted the love in return. In the end the love he wanted did not reciprocate.
